Stop. Rest. It's Magick.

The Hermit's Descent: Why Post-Solstice Rest is Sacred Work

On the magic of strategic withdrawal and the spell of sanctioned stillness

The gifts are opened. The candles have burned down. The feasting is done. And now.... the world expects you to simply carry on.

But here's what the old practitioners knew, what gets lost in our culture of constant productivity: the days between the winter solstice and the new year are not meant for doing. They're meant for descending.

This is Hermit time. Cave time. The pocket of darkness between the sun's return and the calendar's reset. And it's some of the most magically potent time of the entire year, precisely because most people are squandering it on sales and resolutions and forcing themselves back to "normal."

You're going to do something different.

The Lore of the Hinge Days

In various folk traditions, these days have names: the Rauhnächte in Germanic practice, the Dumb Days in Appalachian magic, the Between Time in Celtic lore. They're hinge days, threshold days, days that belong to neither the old year nor the new.

The veil isn't just thin.... it's permeable. Spirits walk. Dreams prophesy. The rules are different.

And crucially, work done on the physical plane during these days doesn't "count" the same way. It's like trying to build a house on swampland. The foundation won't hold. Better to rest, to dream, to let yourself be still and receptive.

This isn't laziness. This is strategic magic.

The Descent Spell: A Ritual for Sacred Rest

This isn't a spell to "make" yourself rest (you're not a machine that needs fixing). This is a spell to sanctify the rest you're claiming, to mark it as intentional magical work rather than mere collapse.

You'll need:

  • Three black or deep blue candles

  • Dried mugwort and lavender

  • A white stone (any kind, even a rock from outside)

  • A dark cloth (black, deep blue, or purple)

  • A bowl of salt water

  • Somewhere you can be undisturbed for 20 minutes

Timing: Perform this spell at dusk on any day between now and January 1st. Dusk matters. You're working with transitional energy.

The Working:

  1. Prepare your space. Lay the dark cloth on your altar or a flat surface. This represents the cave, the womb, the underworld. Arrange the three candles in a triangle on the cloth.

  2. Consecrate the threshold. Light the candles one by one, saying:

    • First candle: "I acknowledge the work I have done"

    • Second candle: "I honor the rest I am claiming"

    • Third candle: "I sanctify this descent into stillness"

  3. The washing. Dip your fingers in the salt water and touch your forehead, your lips, your heart. Say: "I wash away the world's demands. I wash away the guilt of stopping. I wash away the urgency that is not mine."

  4. The herb smoke. Take a pinch of mugwort and lavender. Light it until it smolders (don't let it fully catch fire, just smoke). Pass the white stone through the smoke, saying: "This stone is my anchor in the deep. While I rest, it holds my place in the world."

  5. The vow. Hold the stone in both hands and speak your vow aloud. It should be specific to you, but here's a template:

"I, [your name], claim the right of descent. For [number] days, I withdraw my energy from [specific things you're releasing]. I will not answer what does not call to my spirit. I will not perform what does not feed my magic. I guard my dreams, my silence, and my stillness as sacred. This rest is my working. This cave is my temple. So I speak it, so it is."

  6. Seal it. Place the stone in the center of the candle triangle. Let the candles burn at least one hour (or until they burn out if they're small). The stone is now charged as your anchor.

  7. Carry the anchor. Keep the stone with you during your rest period. When the world demands you "do," hold the stone and remember: you're already doing the work. You're resting. That IS the magic.

What to Actually Do During the Descent

This isn't vacation. It's not "self-care" in the commodified sense. It's intentional withdrawal for magical purposes. Here's what that looks like:

Do:

  • Sleep as much as your body wants

  • Stare at candles or fires without "doing" anything

  • Journal without purpose or structure

  • Take long baths with salt and intention

  • Say no to things without explaining yourself

  • Wear comfortable clothes that make you feel like a cave creature

  • Eat simple, nourishing food

  • Sit in darkness

  • Let your mind wander without directing it

  • Pay attention to dreams and write them down immediately

Don't:

  • Make major decisions (they won't stick anyway, it's swamp time)

  • Start new projects (wait until after January 1st, minimum)

  • Force productivity or "use the time wisely"

  • Consume information frantically (doomscrolling, binge learning, etc.)

  • Engage with people who drain you

  • Apologize for being "boring" or "antisocial"

  • Set resolutions yet (you're still in the underworld, you can't see clearly)

The key: You're not avoiding life. You're composting. You're letting the old year break down into nutrients for the new one. This is underground work.

The Magic of Doing Nothing

Here's what makes this actually powerful rather than just self-indulgent:

When you stop performing, producing, and proving.... when you genuinely withdraw your energy from the world's constant demands.... you create a vacuum. And magic rushes in to fill vacuums.

Insight arrives. Clarity emerges. The path forward reveals itself, but only if you're not frantically searching for it. The answers come in the stillness, not the striving.

This is about reclaiming your sovereignty over your own energy. When you're rested, truly rested, you return to everything else in your life with actual power instead of running on fumes.

Speaking of reclaiming your power: Our Tarot Foundations Class will teach you to read for yourself and trust your own insight. Class starts January 4th.

The Hermit's Gifts

If you do this properly, if you actually let yourself descend and rest without guilt.... here's what you might receive:

  • Dreams that instruct. The liminal time dreams are different. They show you things. Listen to them.

  • Clarity about what to release. Things that seemed important will suddenly reveal themselves as obligations you never agreed to.

  • Energy for what matters. Real rest restores real power. You'll return to the world with fire, not just fumes.

  • Connection to your deeper knowing. The constant noise drowns out your intuition. Silence lets you hear yourself again.

  • Freedom from others' urgency. Their emergency is not your emergency. Rest teaches you this viscerally.

When the World Demands You Emerge

They will. Family, friends, work, the culture at large.... they'll want you back before you're ready. They'll call your rest "hiding" or "laziness" or "selfishness."

This is where the stone comes in. Hold it. Remember your vow. You claimed this descent. You don't owe anyone an explanation.

If you must engage, do it minimally. "I'm taking some quiet time through the new year" is a complete sentence. No justification required.

The people who love you will understand. The people who don't.... well, that's information too.

Emerging Intentionally

Don't just snap back into "normal" on January 1st. That's a trap.

When you're ready to emerge (and you'll feel it, like a seed knowing when to sprout), do it slowly:

  1. Thank the darkness for what it taught you

  2. Blow out your candles one by one, reversing the opening:

    • Third candle: "I release this sacred stillness"

    • Second candle: "I honor the rest I claimed"

    • First candle: "I return to the world renewed"

  3. Keep the stone on your altar or somewhere you'll see it daily

  4. Move slowly back into activity, being selective about what you say yes to

The magic isn't just in the descent. It's in carrying what you learned there back into the light.

A Final Word on Rest as Sacred

The world will tell you that rest is something you "earn" through sufficient productivity. That stillness is "wasted time." That you should always be optimizing, improving, moving forward.

But the old magic knows better.

Rest is your birthright. Stillness is sacred. The descent is necessary. You don't need to earn it, justify it, or apologize for it.

You don't need permission. But if you need a framework that makes it feel like "real work," here it is: this is Hermit magic. This is underworld devotion. This is the necessary death that precedes rebirth.

Claim it. Descend. Trust what happens in the dark.

From our hearth to yours,

Ritual
