3 Levels of Spell Jars: From Charm to Conjure
Spell jars are one of the most popular forms of practical magic today.
They are simple, versatile, and accessible to beginners while offering endless depth for experienced practitioners.
The idea is straightforward: a sealed container holds symbolic ingredients that work together to focus and amplify intention.
Though they are often seen as a modern witchcraft trend, spell jars have deep roots in folk magic.
Variations appear in European witch bottles of the 16th and 17th centuries, which were filled with pins, herbs, and personal items to ward off harm.
In Hoodoo and other African diasporic traditions, container spells such as bottle spells and mojo bags carry protective, healing, or cursing intent. The modern spell jar draws from these lineages, reinterpreted for contemporary practice.
Below are three levels of spell jar work, ranging from a simple charm to a more advanced conjuration.
Level 1: The Simple Charm Jar
A straightforward easy to make container spell, with a handful of intuitive ingredients.
How to do it:
Choose a clear jar or vial.
Add 2-3 herbs, crystals, or small items aligned with your goal (lavender for peace, citrine for abundance, rosemary for cleansing).
Whisper or state your intention.
Seal and carry it, or place it somewhere you’ll see it often.
Suggested Supplies: Mini glass vials, herbs, pocket stones, etc.
Why it works: It gives intention a tangible vessel and is an easy entry point for beginners and dabblers.
Level 2: The Charged Spell Jar
A layered and ritually activated jar layered with ingredients chosen for their correspondences.
How to do it:
Cleanse the jar before use.
Layer ingredients with purpose (i.e. bottom layer = foundation, middle = growth, top = outcome).
Add a written petition or sigil inside.
Seal the jar with candle wax in a color that matches your intent.
Charge it under moonlight, by meditating with it in hand, etc.
Suggested supplies: Colored spell candles, sealing wax, parchment paper, ritual oils, etc.
Why it works: This level deepens practice by combining multiple techniques taking the jar beyond intention, and into symbolism and ritual energy.
Level 3: The Conjure Jar
A full-fledged magickal working.... timed, empowered, and tied into the greater currents of magic.
How to do it:
Select timing (planetary day/hour, moon phase, seasonal rite).
Add advanced ingredients: planetary herbs, consecrated items, drops of ritual oil, or even personal concerns.
Perform a spoken conjuration or prayer over the jar.
Seal and bind with cord or sigil marks on the glass.
Feed the jar regularly (by candlelight, offerings, or smoke) to keep it active.
Suggested Supplies: Planetary herb blends, ritual incense, astrological timing guides, sigil making books and supplies.
Why it works: This level transforms the jar into a living, ongoing spell, a vessel for a spirit and a magical ally that continues to grow in power.
Spell jars are more than containers, they are a bridge between intention and manifestation.
Whether you begin with a simple charm, build a charged jar, or create a fully conjured working, each level offers a way to focus your will and interact with unseen forces.
As your practice deepens, so too does the potential of what can be contained within glass, wax, and herbs.
Choose your level, gather your ingredients, and let the jar become a living extension of your craft.
Blessed Be,
Ritual
